Abby came into my world courtesy of Ashley, which tells you something about Ashley's motivations and rather less about Abby's.
She's a lawyer — a good one, by all accounts — who arrived in Baton Rouge under circumstances that were diplomatically described to me as a "lateral transfer." The less diplomatic version, which Ted provided, involves a firm with a strict no-fraternization policy, a senior partner, and a situation that resolved itself in the way those situations tend to resolve when one party has leverage and the other has a case. She got a junior partnership without the raise that was supposed to come with it and an office upriver. Baton Rouge's gain.
I went on three dates with her. She was smart, funny, and texting me from Prague two weeks later to let me know she was seeing someone else. I appreciated the honesty. Then I found out the someone else was Craig, and that settled it.
Abby is talented and self-aware enough to know exactly what she keeps doing and not quite ready to stop doing it. Some people grow out of that. I hope she does. She deserves better than the choices she keeps making, and she probably knows that too.
