Caroline

She's got Amber's old body and a head of red hair that takes some getting used to. She has a way of sitting on things that don't belong to her and asking questions that seem simple until you think about them.

Caroline arrived the same way most things in my life arrive: without a lot of warning and with Amber vibrating with excitement about it.

She's built from Amber's original body — the one that got damaged and repaired — fitted with a new head that Stella, who is generous in many ways but not all of them, got at the budget end of the Z Company catalog. When Keegan wired her up and realized the hardware limitations, he gave us a choice: smart or sweet. Amber didn't hesitate for a second.

"I choose sweet," she said. "She's my baby sister and I'm gonna take care of her."

That's Caroline, exactly. She works as a French maid for Stella's Les Servantes, and she's very good at the things she's good at. Complex problem-solving is not on that list, but warmth, sweetness, and an absolute devotion to the people she loves — those she has in abundance. She processed her first thirty seconds of conscious existence by reaching up and hugging Amber, which I think tells you everything you need to know.

I'm fond of her. I don't think she knows that yet.
